Cyril Doherty (competitor no. 20) suffered a suspected fatal heart attack whilst competing in his Subaru on SS4 of the rally. The car came to a halt against the tyre barrier. The medical team then travelled with Mr Doherty to the Ulster Hospital, Dundonald, where very sadly he was pronounced dead. The rally was immediately abandoned and final results declared as at the finish of Special Stage 3.
