Renzo Gianelli and his co-driver Maurizio Pesce arrived a few minutes early to the starting line of the first special stage and parked their Opel Corsa GSi on the roadside. While getting out the car Renzo Gianelli was struck by a street car. He was immediately taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
